Let’s Play Wolfenstein 3D! Let’s Play Wolfenstein 3DYou can keep your Doom, Wolfenstein 3D was the first person shooter I grew up on. It was the first first person shooter I’ve ever played really, and it was a goodie.

Let’s Play Wolfenstein 3D:

This was one of the first instances of “3D” graphics so at the time it was pretty revolutionary. It was also pretty addictive growing up, playing through the six campaigns. It’s kind of anticlimactic when you kill the Fuhrer only the third campaign in, but satisfying nonetheless.

Due to time constraints, I focused on the Die Fuhrer Die campaign where we take out Hitler with a ton of bullets. I figured once you had seen one campaign, you had more or less seen them all as most of the game is pretty redundantly fun.

The controls were a bit loose and laggy, but once you got the hang of them they weren’t too bad. It was fun as a kid going for the completionist runs, killing every Nazi, finding every hidden door and passage, collecting every bit of stolen Nazi gold and jewels.

The equipment load out was pretty limited in that you just had a knife, a pistol, an automatic rifle, and a fricking chain gun bazooka which went through bullets like water if you weren’t careful. You almost have to play on the easier difficulties (DON’T HURT ME!) just to break even with your bullet to kill/resupply ratio.

The bosses were the most fun parts of this game. I liked the chemical weapons scientist guy, the last guy in the final campaign as that level was pretty open and sprawling. It was kind of exciting as a kid when you’d trigger the boss and he’d give off that German cry to let you know that he saw you, then run off not knowing where you’d run into him next.

Once he had spotted you, he would basically roam freely about the entire massive level, so if you weren’t careful and took a turn too casually, you could walk into a barrage of bullets in your face which would put you down quickly. Fun fun first person shooter which began a craze which dozens and hundreds of subsequent games would replicate and refine.
