Ah Wave Racer N64. Cruis’n USA was okay, but as early racing titles went for the Nintendo 64, this game was great. Bonus points as always from me for games with great soundtracks (cough, Sunset Bay, cough). Plus I have to think any game I pick back up after not having played them in over a decade but enjoy them nearly as much as I did as a kid, well that game did something right.
Wave Racer N64:
It’s racing. On jet skis! You couldn’t do that on Super Nintendo as far as I know/knew. You couldn’t do that on Playstation I assumed at the time. No, it took all 64 bits to simulate Kawasaki Jet Ski racing I told myself.
As crude as the graphics were, I ate them up. Hell I wanted to drink them up regarding the water on Sunset Bay which always looked a lot to me like Orange Sunkist.
The gameplay was pretty fun and tight. It was super fun doing back flips or front flips off of ramps or submerging my craft after hitting a ramp to clear that bit of Midnight City. I wonder if M83 played a lot of this game as a kid come to think of it.
Anyway, I was pleased at how I had retained my skills twenty years after first playing this game, as well. I took home the gold on every cup/level of difficulty I’m pretty sure.
Okay, enough said.
I better get some free Sunkist and Kawasaki Jet Skis after this one.
