Let’s Play Super Punch Out

Let’s Play Super Punch Out! Let’s Play Super Punch OutSuper Punch Out was one of the first instances of bringing a game from the original NES and creating a next generation sequel and it worked swimmingly, or should I say punchingly… okay I’ll never do that again.

Let’s Play Super Punch Out:

This is much more pick up and play friendly than the first game, or maybe it’s just an easier game. The controls are much more responsive and fluid (cough, you don’t have to double tap down to duck, cough) and it’s just more fun to play. Punch Out the original was more about bragging rights.

Super Punch Out was just a fun game. The addition of the uppercut bar was a wonderful improvement. No more collecting uppercut stars. Now you just had to beat your opponent senseless without taking any damage and the reward is the ability to throw as many uppercuts or the equally satisfying quick uppercut type jabs.

Only a few boxers from the first game come back to make an appearance in this one (Macho Man, Bald Bull, Sandman), but you can generally match the fighters of the old game to the new (Glass Joe to Gabby Jay… hmm same initials…).

This game did exactly what it should: it demonstrated the improvements of the SNES over the NES perfectly, though I’m a bigger fan of the NES’ pick up and play library and think that generally it had the better library which is why I still go back to it after all of this time.
