Let’s Play Quest for Glory 4! On most days, I think Quest for Glory 4 is probably my favorite in the series. Again, that’s high praise considering that I consider the Quest for Glory series to be my favorite from Sierra and one of my favorites of all time. Some days it’s 3, and believe it or not, some days it’s even 5 though that’s mostly attributed to my memories of when and where I was when I played it years ago.
Enough nostalgia, let’s get into why QfG4 is amazing.
Let’s Play Quest for Glory 4:
Quest for Glory 4 takes place immediately after the events of 3. In fact, you’re possessed by a sort of dark magic at the end of 3 and transported to a dark ritual temple at the beginning of 4 by an old nemesis in Ad Avis who is now rocking the undead vampire look.
I think overall, on the days when I claim 4 as being my favorite, it’s because of the setting of this game. Few games more perfectly capture and create an environment as effectively as Quest for Glory 4 does with its gothic and small German country town in the 1800’s, almost like something out of a fairy tale.
This is also obviously the first Quest for Glory game with voice acting, and those games always conjure up the best memories for me because they bring the characters to life so much better than plain dialogue boxes can. So, so many good lines which I can still quote with my brother anytime we’re talking.
The plot is also one of the best, being used as a pawn to collect the rituals for the admittedly beautiful Katrina. There are dozens of creatures all about the area from lore, each with their own back story and in need of your help as a hero one way or another.
One element where I think this game was lacking if I was nitpicking would be the lack of LOCKpicking (heheh) opportunities for a thief. If you’re a thief, you want to have a lot of opportunities to be a thief, and outside of hanging out in the thief’s guild, breaking into Nico’s house, and I guess freeing the gypsy, there’s really not much to do to flex those thieving muscles.
The only other glaring issue is the damn glitches and bugs which cause this game to shut down here and there for no reason. I don’t even remember how I got past that one part in the swamp, except I think I had to start the game over from the beginning with a different character type (which I actually loved doing as quickly as I could).
Beautifully animated, lively and developed characters with witty and oftentimes hilarious dialogue/delivery and accents, and a wonderful soundtrack to boot, piece for piece. How good is that Necrotaur battle theme, btw? There are too many reasons to give as to why this is one of my favorite games of all time.
