Let’s Play FreeSpace 2! If the original FreeSpace was dire, FreeSpace 2 is “no hope… there is no God”. I absolutely love this game for that and the good people at Volition are in top form once again with this excellent better-than-the-original sequel.
Let’s Play FreeSpace 2:
This game picks up 30 years I believe after the events of the first game: The Great War. The humans survived the Great War, basically through escaping from the Shivans and shutting down portals to our systems. Now the terrans and vasudans (now great friends, save for a select racist few) and they’re beginning to get back to pushing the boundaries of their galaxies to explore.
There’s also a very interesting mysterious sub-plot regarding Admiral Bosch, a GTVA defector who created the Neo Terran Front (NTF), a deluded pro Terran, anti-Vasudan rebellion who is looking to communicate with and buddy up with the Shivans for what he believes is the sake of humanity.
The same fantastic voice acting is there, with Robert Logia (sp) killing it as usual. Really the whole cast is fantastic and ups the drama level tenfold, making you forget you’re playing a game and convincing you that you’re a pilot in the GTVA and the fate of humanity lies on your shoulders when you’re out there in “the field”.
The weaponry and ship selection is so much better in this game, as well. We actually have shields from the beginning in this game which makes you wonder how you survived parts of the first game without them.
Additionally, you can pick and choose from much better lasers to equip yourself with and tear through the hulls of countless Shivan fighters. The ships are more responsive and quick which is a must went tracking Shivan fighters.
The same fantastic gameplay is at work in this game, as eventually once you’re commanding your own wings, you can designate their targets for them while you focus on the greater threats in the field, generally bombers.
But yes, speaking of dire, the Shivans have us on the run in this game and have demonstrated the depths of a new bleak bottom for our races. Ships which took decades to complete is vaporized in a matter of minutes by the power the Shivans possess. This game is as close to a David Vs. Goliath situation you’ll encounter, and the fate of trillions the universe over are relying on you.
Oo… just got chills.
