Let’s Play Oregon Trail:
I played this as part of my first Let’s Drink With Brigands live stream, and it was especially fun because it was interactive in that I added everyone from the chat to the team and we set off to make the long trek to Oregon together.
Everyone has fond memories of Oregon Trail, the original survival on the frontier game. What’s the unoriginal version now that I mention that, come to think of it?
The objective is obviously to get your family and group across the treacherous 1800’s America, going from town to town, forging (or floating) over rivers, hunting for your own food, trading with native Americans, and sometimes dying of syphilis. Such was life in the new frontier days.
You can choose your profession at the beginning which will dictate the difficulty or handicap you give yourself on the trail. I went with Banker, because I’m a wuss basically, but I was the one laughing when those deep pockets were paying out big time in the middle of a blizzard, buying supplies while other fools starved or froze to death all around me.
Of course everyone’s de facto favorite part of this game is the hunting. I guess it’s realistic in that you can kill a buffalo and only be able to take back 100 pounds of meat, but what a waste! Still, it’s fun shooting every adorable wild life specimen which runs across your path dead.
It was sad when we lost a couple of our companions to disease or drowning early on in the trail, but I can blame that on the audience who gave me awful advice in how to cross rivers. Eventually I learned to just solve all of my problems by throwing money at them, and at least two or three of us made it to Hope, Oregon, or whatever cheesy name that town went by.
