Lets Play King’s Quest 1! When most people think of old school Sierra, they think of King’s Quest and with good reason. King’s Quest set the standard for what a computer game, let alone an adventure game, could be both graphically and in terms of story. Like most Sierra games, my brother and I missed the original release of King’s Quest 1 but came on around the VGA remake which was much more user (not to mention kid) friendly.
King’s Quest 1 VGA was still a typie, but outside of spelling Rumplestiltskin backwards, it wasn’t that difficult. Of course I say that now when I can know exactly what to do and where to go and can beat it in about 30 minutes, but I don’t remember being hung up on this game for months like others of that time. Getting off point, but it reminds me of games which literally took months to figure out how to beat, or at the very least an intense rental weekend of all Friday night, all Saturday, and Sunday morning to have a shot at beating a game. Now I can pop on whatever NES game I want and generally knock it out in under an hour. All of these games seemed so much more expansive as a kid, but I suppose you could say the same thing for anything at that age compared to now.
Anyway, King’s Quest 1 isn’t nearly my favorite from the series. My favorite thing about it in fact is that I can beat it in roughly a half an hour as mentioned, but still a quality game through and through. It’s a shame that these kinds of games aren’t being made anymore and that an entire generation is missing out on the experience that was Sierra adventure games in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I feel like a curmudeon saying that, but damn it’s true.
I wonder what Roberta Williams is up to today…
