My friend Mike turned me onto this game a couple of years ago and I immediately knew it would be good for a let’s play at some point. I never had any experience with it as a kid so I definitely came into this one late.

This game is another example of the difference between Nintendo and Sega games’ senses of humor.

Let’s Play Toejam and Earl:

Sega games often had a whacky, random, and comparitively lowbrow sense of humor compared to Nintendo’s games which didn’t try as hard to be funny or silly. That’s just how I always saw it the difference. Yeah I note that sense of superiority I felt as a Nintendo guy coming back, as well.

But kids were/are random, whacky, and had lowbrow senses of humor, so Sega was just catering to its audience. Hence its popularity. Anyway, yeah this game is super silly but a lot of fun at the same time.

I split this let’s play with Jen and Jam. It was great playing it with Jen and doing the voices, but with a lot of games I feel a bit obligated to finish it rather than just giving a nice overview of it. For that reason I picked it back up with Jam when we were away at the beach on one particularly rainy, shut in day, and we played through it though it took a bit of doing.

Toejam and Earl is one of those games that, after you understand how to play it and the basic concepts (not to mention what’s in certain present boxes) it becomes a lot more manageable. Also I don’t recommend playing after you’ve had a few drinks as we had at different points; it just makes it more of an uphill battle.

But yes, a very great couch co-op game, and that’s coming from a big couch co-op fan who wishes there were a lot more to get into these days. I just wish it was available on the Super Nintendo back in the day because I’m sure I would have loved it at the time.
