Let’s Play Space Quest 3

Let’s Play Space Quest 3! Let’s Play Space Quest 3This was one of my favorites growing up in the series which was my favorite from Sierra when I was a kid and appreciated the immature but hilarious humor packed into these games.

Let’s Play Space Quest 3:

Space Quest 3 picks up immediately after the events of the second game. Roger’s escape pod from Sludge Vohaul’s ship has been picked up by a garbage scow, and first thing’s first we have to escape by restoring an old scrapped starship on the scow which we dub the Aluminum Mallard.

Part of why I love this game is because it captured my imagination as a child. It’s the first game where you can freely travel between a number of galactic destinations. Granted it’s only 3-4 destinations, but it made me excited for the idea of recreational space travel in the real world which, as a kid, I figured would be ubiquitous by the time I was an adult and I could fly to an intergalactic burger chain, docking my ship and rambling on in just like Roger.

I thought Monolith Burger was amazing and loved that they brought it back in SQ4 (when you even get a chance to work there!). Loved the whimsical theme music of Monolith Burger and yeah, just loved everything it represented in my child’s mind as it combined two of my favorite things as a kid: the idea of space/space travel and fast food (heh).

Like a couple other Sierra franchises, the third game was the last to feature a typie interface, but it wasn’t too bad in this one and combined with the mouse to move around, the gameplay was pretty solid.

This game features the first appearances of a number of characters which would make subsequent appearances or cameos in later Space Quest games, like the Terminator like robot, Fester Blatz, and the head ScummSoft guy.

Fun game, and while four, five, and even six are arguably my favorites from the series just because they’re a lot more quotable between my brother and I, this relatively short entry in the series is quintessentially Space Quest (if that makes sense).

Plus, mech-battle bots!
