Let’s Play Space Quest 1

Let’s Play Space Quest 1! Let’s Play Space Quest 1I absolutely loved all Sierra game and series when I was a kid, and Space Quest was my favorite when I was a kid because I completely responded to the comedy in those games. I’m not sure exactly who it was written for and I don’t want to disparage the games by saying it was written for a younger audience, but I thought it was hilarious when I was ten-ish years old. I remember getting the entire Space Quest collection for Christmas when I was probably about 10 years old and being obsessed with it. My cousins would ask me what I got for Christmas when we’d go to my grandmother’s for the big extended family Christmas and I remember bringing the collection CD with me and being all elitist as only a 10 year old kid can, saying something to the effect of “oh, you’ve never heard of Space Quest?”. Ha I was such a dick.

Anyway, this was the game which kicked it all off. I’m not sure I ever played the original EGA version; I much preferred and was familiar with the VGA remake (hate the typies). I’ve always had a bit of an obsession with space exploration, especially the idea of recreational space travel. When I first played my first Space Quest game I remember thinking/hoping that someday recreational space travel would be a thing in my lifetime and it would be possible to cruise around the galaxy, stopping off at intergalactic fast food joints for a quick bite before heading back out. It’s kind of really fucking sad to know that that will never happen in my lifetime, or any lifetimes in the next several centuries for that matter, but don’t tell 10 year old Tony that.

I also identified with Roger Wilco, because how could you not? Even in space/the future you have to identify with the blue collar guy, and as a space age janitor, Roger Wilco was as blue collar as they came. The idea that this laid back, happy go lucky screw up could become an intergalactic hero always appealed to me, and being a goofy kid, I probably always saw something of myself in Roger.

In the years since I was 10 years old my tastes have changed (I won’t say matured), and Quest for Glory is now easily my favorite series in the lot, but I’ll always have a special place in my heart for my first Sierra love that was Space Quest.
