Let’s Play Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya

Let’s Play Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya! Let’s Play Shining Force The Sword of HajyaI loved the portability of the Game Gear when I was a kid, and I loved RPGs. When I read about Shining Force in a monthly game mag, I was hooked. I followed that game like mad until it came out and got it with birthday money when I was probably eight or nine.

Let’s Play Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya:

The only thing I didn’t realize about this game in all my “research” ahead of time was that this was purely a tactical RPG, meaning unfortunately there wasn’t an element of free roaming around a world. It’s the freedom that I appreciated in many of my RPGs growing up.

Still, it had the fun (yes fun) element of leveling up, collecting better equipment, and designing your party, picking and choosing who you would bring into battle. The various people who made up your party had different ranges of motions, ranges on their attacks/spells, different defenses, etc. so I appreciated the tactical element of it. I guess I just described every tactical RPG ever made, but anyway I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

But yeah, it does get a bit wearisome running into battle after battle with no downtime aside from a quick menu system style town in between from time to time, and those massive mage attacks quickly taught you to spread your party out or lose them all in one cheap yet effective attack on them.

That aside, I loved this game and actually really enjoyed replaying this for the channel on an almost addictive or compulsive level where it actually didn’t get tired; I generally just wanted to play more and more. Maybe I’ll get around to the other Shining Force games at some point in the future, but this was a good one and one of my favorites in my decent Game Gear collection of games.
