Let’s Play Punch Out!

Let’s Play Punch Out! When I finally had access to a big screen, HD television and premium sound system, the first thing NES game I wanted to try on it ws Punch Out. There’s a certain novelty in playing that game on a big screen which was created to playback the latest technological achievements in movies and gaming, and it never wore on me. I also get a rush playing Punch Out in front of other people more than any other game; there’s just a certain amount of respect associated with putting the later intimidating boxers in their place. But I digress, again.

lets play punch outThere were some great bouts in my Let’s Play Punch Out video, particularly near the end when the difficulty caught up to me. It starts to get a little intense around Soda Popinski (his vodka from the arcade replaced with soda pop, cos everyone can get behind that), and ultimately i was proud of this let’s play. Of course I got my ass kicked by Mr. Dream in this video.

Sidenote, but I can never remember if Nintendo remade this with the much least controversial and much more fictional Mr. Dream because Mike Tyson’s bad reputation was catching up with him out of the ring or because he simply didn’t want his name associated with it anymore, so if someone remembers what the deal was…

Anyway, the Lil’ Mac Mr. Dream rematch was well worth the price of admission (which in this case is free) and then some. Of course the hairiest part is just getting through the first roughly minute and a half of the first round where he throws knock out punches with little warning. You really need your reflexes to be up to snuff to get through this part, and these fights were the source of a lot of frustration for me as a child; I’m pretty sure I have the bite marks on the old controllers to prove it as that’s how my adolescent anger manifested.

In the rematch, it takes me two full rounds and 99.99% of the final round to put him away, but when I finally do it’s completely worth it. The reaction was genuine; I surprise myself sometimes. Okay, must be less of a cocky ass in the next one.
