Let’s Play Megaman Soccer

Let’s Play Mega Man Soccer! let's play mega man soccerThis being my favorite soccer game (in admittedly a very limited pool of soccer games I’ve played), I think I played this to sort of recognize and celebrate the World Cup which was going on at the time. Capcom was trying something a little different this go around with one of their main franchises in Mega Man and making a soccer themed game, but it completely worked, random as it was. I guess sometimes combining a classic franchise with a random sport pays dividends (see Mario Tennis), and this is a perfect example of it at work.

Let’s Play MegaMan Soccer:

So first off, this being a Capcom game, and a Mega Man game at that, I can’t not mention the fantastic music. Most of the pieces are pretty solid, but Woodman’s aggression mixed with a twinge of melancholia and a call back to something familiar track is one of my favorite video game musics of all time. I should really make a list of my top 10 favorite video game musics of all time… yeah just decided I’m going to do that.

Anyway, what makes this game fun is that it takes advantage of the variety which makes the Mega Man series great in the various robots. Not only do the unique robot weapons translate to unique super kick moves which all have their own animations and effects on other robots, but each robot has its own unique set of stats, making them ideally suited for offense, defense, goaltending, speed, etc.

And with every robot team you topple, you get to add a new robot to your team so that you can decide which robots would excel best at the various skill positions. You wouldn’t think that making your fantasy dream soccer team out of all of Mega Man’s foes would be fun, but it totally is. As you go, you quickly replace your all Mega Man team of players with a diverse cast of familiar robots from the series up to that point (yay diversity!).

Fun game play which is admittedly easy to exploit for 90% of the game never gets old and the aforementioned robot diversity in your soccer team makes this game a refreshing entry in what was already becoming a stale franchise in the mid 90’s.
