Let’s Play Mega Man 1! I played the second Mega Man a year or so before I played the first because in addition to two being arguably mine and everyone else’s favorite from the series, its just a better game. We even got Mega Man 2 well before we got the first one in real life. In fact while I’m thinking about it, this game might be my least favorite of the first four just because it lacked all of the staples which we came to associate with subsequent Mega Man games.
Let’s Play Mega Man 1:
That said, Mega Man 1 was the game that started a literally neverending series for Capcom which is still beating out games to this day. I can’t help but think of one of my favorite XPlay sketches when I mention that:
But yeah as previously mentioned, this game wasn’t firing on all cylinders, but the basic premise was there. You’re a robot constructed to defend the world against Dr. Wily’s evil robot creations which, techinically in this game, he just stole from Mega Man’s creator, Dr. Light. The coolest thing about the Mega Man series was your ability to use the weapons of your enemies after you defeated them which made for some fun times and possibilities. It also forced you to remember the random matching memory game which was “which weapon hurts which robot most?”. Most of the time the combinations didn’t make any sense (like from MM3, “Top Man’s spinning attack beats the crap out of Shadow Man? Okay.”). Still, once you figured it out you felt like you found a loophole in the game.
The music in this game wasn’t nearly as memorable as in 2, 3, and 4, and the special Rush type moves, sliding ability, and booster charge hadn’t come down the pike yet, but the gameplay was there, and everyone saw the repetitive, beat it into the ground potential at Capcom to set this franchise and company up nicely for years to come.
