Let’s Play Gauntlet

Let’s Play Gauntlet! let's play gauntletA request from DL I believe who was very generous and gifted me the remake of Gauntlet sometime after this, this is another one of those mind numbingly difficult games.

Let’s Play Gauntlet:

I played this twice, once with Matt with Jen helping to guide us, and once on my own. Something which bothers me and probably most people who have played this before is the constant hemorrhaging of life.

Whether you’re moving, standing still, or getting whacked by a dude, you’re always taking damage somehow. I’m not really sure if that’s meant to represent some medical condition which all of the hero’s had (maybe that’s why they bonded and formed up) or even a curse, but I don’t know that it ever gets explained.

Normally I wouldn’t have an issue with this, but the game itself is difficult enough without that element in play, so I don’t know the need for adding it.

Oh wait, this was an arcade game, so any excuse to make kids hemorrhage quarters (you like that?) was probably fine with the developers and arcade owners alike. Yeah, a lot of these arcade games were pretty cheap like that, it just seems that that’s something they could have addressed in the port, or at least give the player an option of having it on or off.

I just realized I spent this entire post talking about the hemorrhaging of life in this game… and come to think of it, that’s just fine, because that represents the difficulty and experience of this game just fine.
