Let’s Play Warcraft 2! I was obsessed with the strategy action themed Warcraft 2 when I was a kid. I bought the first one in grade school when an acquaintanance of mine named Mark recommended the game to me. Wait, no, I bought it a couple of years later, at the time he just burned me a copy of the game via CD Rom (WHAT?). That technology seemed crazy when I was a kid and I really felt like I was getting away with something. In retrospect, I was getting away with theft, so maybe that’s what made the first game better.
Let’s Play Warcraft 2:
After playing Warcraft 2 then going back to Warcraft 1, you’re reminded of how annoying the original is, but fortunately it sold well and Blizzard saw it fit to give it a number of improvements when it ccame time to make the sequel, making it a lot more intuitive and friendly to play. Selecting multiple dudes at once and right clicking on what you wanted them to destroy or move to was such a time saver and improvement, so much so that i can’t play the original anymore (as I’ll explain when I get to that let’s play, but let’s stick with Let’s Play Warcraft 2 for the moment).
I was always an Orc guy. They just seemed more fun, badass, and less vanilla and by the book like the humans. They commanded lots of beasts and had wizards who could bring back your dudes from the dead, all good things. Plus who doesn’t love clicking the same peon over and over again to hear their fun programmed dialogue?
There were also air and sea vehicles to create and conquer with in this game, and the graphics were a huge step up. Musically it was still nothing to write home about unless you love that mid 90’s midi sound.
The story modes were fine, but playing over the internet or locally with a friend was a ton of fun and where the game really shined. Here you could create custom scenarios for you and your adversaries, be on the same time or against your friends, and any number of other options. It was some of the first online gaming, and it was wonderfully addictive (and it wasn’t just me if WoW was any indication).
