Let’s Play Star Tropics

Let’s Play Star Tropics! Let’s Play Star TropicsNothing in the adventure genre says summer time and island fun like Star Tropics. Taking place in exotic beach and jungle locales, this is just another solid original entry from Nintendo.

Let’s Play Star Tropics:

You star as Mike, the ace high school pitcher who is visiting his uncle on C Island. I’m sure Mike will have a bright and lucrative pitching career in the future, but for now he’ll use the hell out of that arm to smack enemies with a deadly yo-yo attack. Yes, your weapon of choice in this game is a yo-yo, and it’s pretty damn effective.

Upon arrival to the island, Mike learns that his uncle has gone missing and is presumed kidnapped or worse by the locals. It’s up to Mike to use that arm and the help of a number of new friends, human and animal, to learn the whereabouts of and rescue his uncle.

Gotta love the music in this game. It’s games like this that truly impress me in how the music composers got what they did out of the limitations of the sound board of the NES.

The gameplay was unique and solid, as well. The mostly top down view and hopping around on different blocks to solve puzzles was one of a kind. Nintendo gets points for once again reinventing what they put created in the sequel, but it’s a shame that ultimately Star Tropics 2 just couldn’t live up to the standard of the first title.

This game just had a really cool vibe that I didn’t get with many other titles for the NES, kind of creepy and mythical and exotic all at once. Kind of makes me wonder what a reboot might look like, because as far as I know they never touched it since the sequel.
