All right you Sega fanatics, calm down calm down. I finally played a Sega game. I actually did a whole month devoted to it; something which proved to be so popular it will likely be a yearly occurrence.

If you grew up in the 90’s as I did, there was a 50% chance that you were a Sega kid. Sonic was Sega’s flagship franchise, and that (for some reason chilidog loving) hedgehog was everywhere!

Anyway, let’s get to the let’s play.

Let’s Play Sonic the Hedgehog:

My friend Matt fell into that 50% and was a Sega kid. As such it was great to have him there as my spirit and literal guide through this game. Actually, to be fair I was a big fan of the Game Gear and had about 30 games, including all of the Sonic games. I always tend to forget that because in the grand scheme of things I had a lot more Nintendo stuff, but for me Sega was easily winning the portable/handheld race/war at the time.

I actually have a lot of fond memories playing Sonic and other Sega games on holiday road trips with the family. It always felt like I was gaming the system somehow when I figured out I could play videogames (in color) to kill the boredom on historically very boring drives.

The thing which I always found pretty interesting about Sonic games was that the levels can seem pretty cut and dry, in and out, if you follow the “speed path” as I’ll call it. Basically a set of springs, tubes, tunnels, and other things which send you flying through the level at an enormous rate so it seems like a pretty quick playthrough.

The “lines” were so well made that it didn’t seem like you could access the areas around the line, when really you could go around it and find lots of hidden stuff. When you thought of it like that, the levels all seemed much larger in scope.

I was a bit disappointed when I found out I was thinking of Sonic 2 and beyond for the manual on-demand spin move, and some of the later levels were tricky, and what’s up with losing all of your coins with a single hit, but you only need one to carry any life, and…

But I digress. It was fun playing this one with Matt and I look forward to playing the sequel this September.
